Description
Little is known about the rock petroglyphs, and ongoing research is continuing on the meanings of this ancient art. In this Rock Petroglyph, is this a family on a hunting expedition? Or, is it as often happened later in the artistic world, a painter who used and reused a canvas to create new and better works of art? Each person who studies petroglyphs will always find something unique and different in these ancient artworks. This is truly a unique study which is ongoing.
The area which is now Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site in Utah, has been continuously occupied for more than 10,000 years. Homesteaded in 1884 by Byron F. Wickwire; Medicine Lodge was originally a working cattle ranch. The ranch was purchased in 1972 by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department which created the 12,000 acre Medicine Lodge Wildlife Habitat Management Area. In 1973, a portion of the habitat management area was developed into Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site where cultural history and recreational access continues today.
Ongoing interpretation of the site’s cultural resources has helped the public appreciate the importance of protecting these resources for future generations. “As we celebrate 50 years of Medicine Lodge as a State Park it’s important to remember that people have been living here for more than 10,000 years”, says Park Superintendent Heather Jolley. “Medicine Lodge continues to be committed to improving communities and enriching lives”, she adds.
