Description
A visit to New Mexico is one that should include a visit to the Acoma Pueblo Sky City. This wonderful Indiginous People’s city is so interesting. Built on top of a very large mesa, this city, literally on a hill, overlooks a massive valley below. The beauty of the village, is one that you will not forget soon!
Today, there is no running water or electricity. The Tribal elders are required to live on the Mesa for their tenure as leaders. Often, many of the family elders, will leave the hustle and bustle of the city life below the Mesa Top, and retreat to the quiet of the housing above. Many live on the Mesa year round.
On top of the Mesa is a Catholic Church. As with many of the Indiginous People, the Spanish Settlers, mandated the people convert to Christianity. Today, there is much that has been said to the detriment of this piece of history.
Yet, many of the People have retained their faith in the Church and will take people through the church. Respect is given to the many people who gave their lives to the building of the church. Tradition holds that the bones of those whose lives were given, are entombed in the walls. Whether or not this is true, out of respect, no photos, or voices were heard, except that of our guide. as we walked through these sacred walls.
Acoma Pueblo mission church was a 12-year project, begun shortly after the Spanish founded the mission in 1629 and completed in 1642. During these years, much of the adobe village was built too. The church is 150 feet long and 40 feet at its widest, constructed of the same adobe bricks and plaster used to build the older village structures. The roof is adobe with wooden beams called “vigas.” The vigas are over 40 feet long and 14 inches square. The timber necessary to craft them was transported 30 miles from the San Mateo Mountains, probably carried by Acoma on foot. The adobe walls of the mission church are over seven feet thick on one side of the church and almost five on the opposite side. A parapet surrounds the roof and twin towers with belfries that face east.
