Description
The Quarai were a Tiguex (Southern Tiwa) Pueblo band of American Indians that originated in present-day New Mexico. Because of Apache hostilities they fled to El Paso in around 1675; later they moved to Isleta del Sur on the Rio Grande.
Quarai, also known as Quarai State Monument, is also the name of a historic site that was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark District. It was declared a National Historic Landmark District in 1962.[2][3] It includes 13 structures including a pueblo and a mission which is known as Nuestra Seora de La Purisima Concepcion de Cuarac. It stands 40 ft tall and once had walls that were approximately 3 to 6 ft wide.[2] It is included in Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument. Wikipedia
Perfect angles with shadows grace the shale walls of the church at the Quary Ruins built by the Quarai People along with the Spaniards. A quiet community, nestled in a small valley, there was plenty of food to sustain the people in this villiage.
Now the ruins are available to walk through. The windows held up by sturdy Oak, Juniper, or other native trees, are placed in each window and doors for stability. Genious ancient architects have left us with unanswered questions...but one is certain...these people knew how to build structures several stories high that still remain today!
