Description
Migration. I just told a friend that I looked forward to taking pictures of the hummingbirds when the Rufous migrated by our home…and had just told my husband not a few moments earlier how I looked forward to their arrival! Rufous means reddish brown, so it is fitting that these hummingbirds are called Rufous ( Selasphorus rufus) for their take the tones of their feathers. Suddenly, my husband said there was a hummingbird at the hanging baskets flowers. IT WAS THE ONE!
Mean, compact, and very aggressive, but their color is stunning! If your lighting is perfect, the male Rufous Hummingbirds glow like coals: bright orange on the back and belly, with a vivid iridescent-red throat. One of the more aggressive hummingbirds, when the rufous arrive, the Annas generally take a back seat to these aggressive birds. But be patient, for they will only stay for a couple of weeks! Then the garden will return to “normal” with the normal fighting of the Annas fighting for territory! What a day behind the camera!!
