Artist's Description
Located in Coconino County, Arizona, USA within the Wupatki National Monument. This is one of the small villages in the Wupatki National Monument, caled Wukoki Ruins. It is an IUCN Category V protected landscape/seascape.
This specific building, a 3 story structure, looks like a lookout tower. It is build on top of a magnificent outcropping or sandstone. It is amazing to see how small parts of the outcropping were filled with the sandstone work of these amazing people.
The name Wukoki means Big House. Buildings were built of sandstone, probably taken from the sandstone rocks along the river, giving these magnificnt 2 story dwellings their red color. Mortar was added to fill in areas which opened. This mortar was able to protect the people from the cold in addition to keeping the sandstone in place.
Waputki National Monument apparently, from careful excavations, was a trade hub as small articles were discovered from as far as the Gulf Coast.
