Artist's Description
Shiprock, a sacred mountain of the Navajo Nation is seen in this photo as viewed from West as we travelled in New Mexico.
Shiprock is named after the nearby Shiprock rock formation. It is home to the annual Northern Navajo Fair, held every October. Since 1984, the community has been the host of the Shiprock Marathon and Relay. It is also home to a campus of Diné College (formerly Navajo Community College), a tribally controlled community college with seven other campuses across the Navajo Nation.
Shiprock is also the name of a Navajo town 13 miles northeast, the largest settlement in the whole reservation, centered around the junction of US 64 with US 491. The peak is a sacred place to the Navajo, who know it as Tsé Bit' A'í, 'the rock with wings', since a legend tells of a time when the mountain moved like a bird, transporting the Navajo away from a distant land where they were under attack, to their present home in this part of the Southwest.
