Description
Tucked under an overhang of huge granite walls, our Canyon de Chelly tour guide, drove us by this old Hogan, (derived from the Spanish word Hogar which means house) and is surrounded by an old cottonwood fence. To the right, stands an original Frame from which the women of the Ancient Ones, Dine, would weave blankets and rugs for home use or for trading to other peoples who wandered into the area. Made from the mud or the great mud from the earth the hogan was made by adobe bricks. Wooden beams were used as roof frame. The newer window faces the East, as is traditional in the Anasazi life. The door, now a wooden door, is locked now. The doors and windows were covered with heavy rugs and blankets which were made from the wool provide by the sheep and goats raised by the families. Crops were raised along the areas with water runoff during the Monsoon season. Life was simple and good.

Great in B&W and also a great documentary photo for the people living in this rough terrain.
