Description
I was picking my beautiful Dahlias in the yard. At eye level was this large adult brown praying mantis eating a black bug which it had caught, Its shadow was perfecdt on the petal below. Pollen dotted his left antanna. How interesting! What a beauty. It may sound odd,but I watched in fascination as he ate that bug marveling how they so easily capture them in a flicker of the eye! What a beautiful photo opportunity. I ran to get the camera before he was finished…with him on the flower, it would be a wonderful picture.
Watching a mantis is incredible! They will sit like statues for hours until they fine an insect to stalk. They wait until it comes close. If needed, they will creep closer so they will be in the path of the insect they are stalking. Suddenly, more quickly than the eye can see, they mantis strikes and the bug is now dinner. They're sharp talons and spikes on its strong arms, strike and stab the insect. There is no escape! After the bug has been devoured, he will carefully clean himsef so all parts of the insect are gone. Nature is truly amazing!
