Wonderful :) Looks like the Scottish thistle, which is in the same family. You can eat the centre of the thistle too, though I'm not sure I'd be game! Lovely floral shot :)

Beautiful capture of the artichoke flower Debby! (You are right! I've photographed this type of bloom never knowing the plant was artichoke).

Brian, not all of them purple flowers are artichoke, but they could be related. I don't know...I just know that we grew some one year and were so excited when were able to eat a few of our plant's fruit!
