Description
Alongside the two lane road on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, an abandoned hogan sits, wooden door frame, and some old pieces of metal dumped by the side of this old home. The door, traditionally faces the East...facing the rising sun. Energy effecient, these homes were made of wood or mud. The dirt floor was maintained with water to pack down the floor. In the center of the hogan is a small stove which would be used for heating in the cooler months and cooking. In the hotter months, cooking outside is traditional. Small cots or beds line the sides of the interior of the home, with pegs for clothing and other family items belonging to the family. Many families still live in these traditional homes, serene, simple but happy.
