Description

A trip to the dentist provided me more than just a filling in the chair…on my way out, I noticed this beautiful blue passion flower. The only time I had seen one was in San Francisco and fell in love with them. The receptionist told me that this was a Fruitless Passion Fruit, and went on the explain the beauty of the flowers vrs the fruit. I was so thrilled when I returned sometime later, that the flowers were still on the large bush, and this was one of the resulting photos. Being totally cluesless on this species of plant, I went to the internet and discovered many things…that this is a subtropical vine that bears juicy, aromatic, and sweet to acidic fruit. Altogether, from what I read, these are not the most easily grown plants!
The Passion Flower is symbolic of the crucifixion of Christ, or as known in biblical history, the Passion of the Christ. The flower has spikes protruding from the center, symbolizing the crown of thorns. There are 10 petals, for the 10 faithful apostles. The 72 purple filaments symbolize the crown of thorns worn by Jesus, and the three stigmas represent Christ and the two thieves on the crosses
