Description
The largest of of the Pueblo's in Chaco Canyon's ancient walls still stand. Pueblo Bonita was a large 'villiage' in the culutre of Chaco Canyon. One of many pueblos, this beautiful ruin must have been a blessing to the Anasazi's people who woke each morning to the beautiful lush grasses surrounding the wals, and the red cliffs which adided in protecting the elements from damaging their homes. The work of these ancient ancesstors of the Navajo people worked hard to sustain their lives Chaco Canyon was an eastern hub of the travelers of what is now Eastern New Mexico. Pieces of shells, corals, turquoise, and other precious stones which clearly came from areas both South and North of the land. Crops, hunting, trading - life was good. The culture seemingly disappeared, only walls and bits and pieces of relics were left behind. Today, many speculate as to what happened to these ancient Anasazi, yet the true reason is still unknown.
For over 2,000 years, Pueblo peoples occupied a vast region of the south-western United States. Chaco Canyon, a major centre of ancestral Pueblo culture between 850 and 1250, was a focus for ceremonials, trade and political activity for the prehistoric Four Corners area. Chaco is remarkable for its monumental public and ceremonial buildings and its distinctive architecture – it has an ancient urban ceremonial centre that is unlike anything constructed before or since. In addition to the Chaco Culture National Historical Park, the World Heritage property includes the Aztec Ruins National Monument and several smaller Chaco sites managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
