I rounded the curve on my drive down the mountain to go home yielded horrifying anguish...Yes...I KNEW the fires of 2021 in the Sequoia Mountains had been severe, yet, I had never envisioned the scarred and barren shells of trees on both sides of the General's Highway, the thoroughfare of the Giant Sequoias in California. What could have been a beautiful natural abstract view of flowing redwood trees, was now a mass of blackened skeletons tree trunks and branches
I stopped and wept. That's all I could do. Before me stood trees which had been growing for many years, thick trunks now dead. My eyes scanned sadly, the once adorable airy fernlike saplings -now bare twigs, which were some years old, yet not old enough to have to have given their lives to a fire. Oh how sad! Trees stumps, marked in blue by the Forest Service for removal, dotted the hillside. These wonderful trees, burned - gone - the green underbrush reduced to brown and blackened earth.
