A castle in California? One might think this is a bit odd, but indeed, we have a beautiful "castle" on a mountain top on the Central Coast in the town of San Simeon. it is called Hearst Castle. This is a magnificent place to visit. It is now a state part. There is a family compound on the beach front blew the one room school house pictured in the foreground of the photo. Hearst Castle can been seen high in the background. The "castle" is so large that there are 4 levels of tours which will show you different aspects of what this man acquired in his lifetime.
San Simeon School One Room School House still stands, surrounded by a picket fence. The red tile roof and pointed bell tower is wearing now, but still is memoriable. An old fire hydrant stands at the right corner of the fence. Spring wildflowers decorate the playground.

Thank you Johanna! Actually, the 'town on the hill' is Hearst Castle, the famous newspaper publisher. He built a massive estate on the hill...complete with a zoo, and had parties with all of the Hollywood personalities in the early 1900's

Lovely...and just up the highway from where I live. I have taken a similar shot...unfortunately those hills in background have not been green for some time but spectacular when they are!
